When your child has to memorize something, explain how to create a mental image. Have your child imagine a message board, and "write" the facts to remember on it. Later, when it's time to recall the facts, your child can close eyes and visualize the message board with the facts written down.

Does your child have difficulty learning vocabulary words? Help your student turn a vocabulary word list into a piece of creative writing. Each week, make up two characters and an opening sentence. "A child and a chicken strolled to the store… ." Have your child write the rest of the story using words from the list. Creating the story will help your student put the words into context and remember them.

They explored how eye structure helps animals survive in their environments — from those that thrive in daylight to creatures that see clearly in the dark. 🦉🦌🐱

Practice two math skills measure by measure
Measuring things around the house can be a fun way to teach your child two important math skills: calculating exact amounts and estimating. Get out a teaspoon, for example, and ask your child to estimate how many teaspoons of water would fill one cup, then check. Or, have your student measure the length of the teaspoon, then estimate how many spoons wide the door is. What would that be in inches?

To prepare for your conference, make a list of things to tell the teacher about your child (interests, strengths, challenges, etc.). Make another list of things to ask about (grades, behavior, attitude, friends, etc.). Be sure to ask your child for suggestions about what you and the teacher should discuss, too.

Visit the library and choose seven books for the week. Set them near your child's bed. Each day, say, "We'll read this book tonight. Tomorrow, we'll get to read another." This lets your child know that reading is an important part of your day, too. At breakfast, talk together about the book you read the night before.
